The scene

Aoi
ゆうきさん、おはようございます。
Morning, Yuuki.
Yuuki
あおいさん、おはようございます。最近さいきん、元気げんきそうですね。
Morning, Aoi. You're looking well lately.
Aoi
そうですか。実じつは、先月せんげつから ジムに 通かよっているんです。
Really? Actually, I've been going to the gym since last month.
Yuuki
へえ。週しゅうに 何回なんかい 行いくんですか。
Oh! How many times a week do you go?
Aoi
一週間いっしゅうかんに 三回さんかいです。一回いっかいに 一時間いちじかんずつ 走はしっています。
Three times a week. I run for an hour each time.
Yuuki
一時間いちじかんも ですか。すごいですね。私わたしは 十分じゅっぷんも 走はしれませんよ。
A whole hour? That's impressive. I can't even run ten minutes.
Aoi
最初さいしょは、私わたしも 五分ごふんずつしか 走はしれませんでした。
At first I could only manage five minutes at a time too.
Yuuki
そうなんですか。ジムの あとは、何なにか 飲のみますか。
Is that so. Do you drink anything after the gym?
Aoi
はい。大豆だいずから 作つくった プロテインを 飲のみます。これは 姉あねに もらった ものです。
Yes. Protein made from soy beans. This one's something I got from my sister.
Yuuki
おいしいですか。
Is it good?
Aoi
うーん、牛乳ぎゅうにゅうほど おいしく ないです。でも、体からだには いいですよ。
Hmm — not as tasty as milk. But it's good for you.
Yuuki
じゃあ、私わたしも 今日きょうから 始はじめます。一日いちにちに 十分じゅっぷんずつ。
Right, I'm starting today too. Ten minutes a day.
Aoi
いいですね。十分じゅっぷんでも、毎日まいにち 続つづけたら 変かわりますよ。
Good. Even ten minutes will change things if you keep it up daily.

The six points

〜に

per — how often, across a span of time

Span of time + に + number of times. The に marks what you're measuring against.

一日いちにちに 三回さんかい、この 薬くすりを 飲のんでいます。 I take this medicine three times a day.

〜ずつ

each / at a time

Attaches to a quantity. Two uses that share one word: portioning something out to each person, and repeating the same amount over and over.

この 本ほんを 毎日まいにち 二にページずつ 勉強べんきょうしましょう。 Let's study two pages of this book every day.

〜から

made from — material that has changed form

Use から when you can no longer see the original material. If it's still visible, use で instead — 紙かみで作つくったにんぎょう, a doll made of paper. This から/で split is a standard exam trap.

日本酒にほんしゅは 米こめから 作つくられます。 Japanese sake is made from rice.

〜も

as much as / not even

One particle, two directions. With a positive verb the number is surprisingly big; with a negative verb, surprisingly small.

ビールを 三本さんぼんも 飲のみました。/ パーティーには 十人じゅうにんも 来きませんでした。 I drank three whole beers. / Not even ten people came to the party.

N₁は N₂ほど 〜ない

N₁ is not as ~ as N₂

The ending must be negative. Same meaning as N₂のほうが〜, said from the other side.

今週こんしゅうは 先週せんしゅうほど いそがしく ありません。 This week isn't as busy as last week.

Noun modification

the description goes in front

English trails the description behind the noun; Japanese loads it all up in front and the noun lands last. Everything before the noun is one block.

あそこの 青あおい セーターを 着きた 背せの高たかい 男おとこの人ひとは だれですか。 Who is that tall man in the blue sweater over there?
